Ghost in the Shell Fuchikoma - Retro Fan Art

Overall video showcase. It's kind of a silly video but I wanted to match the tone and vibe of the manga and PS1 game over the more serious takes people are more familiar with.

These shots show how things are broken up and driven by various shaders.

Modeled from scratch based off various illustrations. All were a little different so eventually took a little bit from various sources rather than basing it on one specific illustration.

Used various bases meshes for body/hair and kit bashed them together as a starting point. Used masking and extracting for the clothing. The shoes came from an accessory pack.

Environment was built with a few relatively simple textures as either the cel shade or paint shader would help really drive the look.

I looked up a bunch of different shader videos on youtube and followed along, kit bashing and modify to suit the needs of my project.

The main references were illustrations by Shirow Masamune, Toshiro Kawamoto, and Hiroyuki Kitakubo. Though ultimately I would divert to my own sensibilities in adding a VHS look and washed out feel.

Video showing the VHS filter and tracking distortion. This shader ties everything together for a retro look.

Just a fun shot inspired by ilustrations where theres a bunch of mini Fuchikoma

For fun here it is running on a CRT.

Ghost in the Shell scene inspired by the Playstation 1 game/manga, and my own sensibilities.

This started off as a project mainly to showcase the Fuchikoma(red spider tank) but the scope changed with building out a whole scene around it. The goal wass to create a somewhat anime cel and VHS look. There are 2 post processes, one for the cel shader and one for the VHS. The cityscape BG uses a custom stencil depth to have a blurred posturized look. I kept the frames in 4:3 for a retro look and the VHS shader does a lot to give it that retro feel with its fuzzyness and distortions.

Everything was compiled and animated in Unreal 5, screen capturing a play of a sequence.

Fuchikoma and environment modeled in 3Ds Max. The character was made using various base meshes kit bashed and modified together. I am not a character artist so just went with simple work flows to get the look I wanted.

Inspired by Shirow Masamune, Toshiro Kawamoto, and Hiroyuki Kitakubo.

Music is Staff Roll - From the Ghost in the Shell S.A.C. Playstation 2 game soundtrack.
